Scientific curiosity and continuous advancement of testing standards are at the heart of the Gübelin Gem Lab’s work. The Research & Development department explores novel analytical methods for gem testing, develops new methods and software to make consistent interpretation of all acquired data, and plans and executives fieldtrips to collect new material for our ever growingever-growing Gübelin Reference Stone Collection.

This all contributes to fundamental gemmological knowledge, ensuring the continued trustworthiness of our work. Its interdisciplinary team combines mineralogical and geological expertise with skills in geochemistry and spectroscopy, and complemented by data science to refine the determination of the identity and authenticity of gem materials, origin determination and treatment detection techniques.

Collaborations with universities and research institutions worldwide foster innovation and uphold the lab’s position as a scientific leader.
